A rather belated post to mark the exciting news that following one of my Lockdown books being acquired by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, it is currently on display in their New Arrivals exhibition (running until April). Very happy to be sharing a case with the very talented Susie Wilson. Many thanks to Archivist Kirstie Meehan for including my book in this exhibition.
It feels appropriate to be exhibited in Scotland as the original book was created as part of an ABC print exchange and was posted north of the border to the lovely Gen Harrison. The first digitally printed version was bought by someone in Scotland, and the book then featured last December in an exhibition in Edinburgh’s Upright Gallery.
Many thanks to everyone who has bought a copy of this book – it’s raised over £200 for Bristol Northwest Foodbank.
Week seven
‘Snow’ - a tiny folded concertina book of posca pen markings of snow on tracing paper
Book cover of torn Somerset paper with a tracing paper wrapper
‘24.01.21’ – another snow markings book
The black paper shows off the markings well, but is maybe a bit heavy for the snowy subject matter
A tiny circular concertina book with a stitched line which follows a drawn line walk down my garden steps
Experiments with natural ink (made with red cabbage and a discarded bouquet) and masking fluid
Latest dyeing results – the multifarious browns of bramble
Feeling the gravitational pull back to making books this week… three tiny books have emerged from recent mark making work. Interesting to see how I’m still drawn to presenting work in a book format even when that’s not a conscious decision. This is process led though, which is different to my usual approach of choosing a format and then thinking of appropriate content. I’m enjoying experimenting with my natural inks and masking fluid (although I’m not sure how stable the colour will be, so probably best to scan these in to preserve them in some way). Quite a bit of dyeing going on in the background - this week’s finished results are from bramble prunings… a surprisingly broad range of browns. After a biting cold snap, the temperature has started to rise again and it’s beginning to feel like Spring is finally on its way. Hurray!
Post-BABE
My table at the Bristol Artist’s Book Event (BABE)
Not a lot of time to look round, but I’m very pleased with my purchases from other book artists
My swap with Eva Hejdström – books good enough to eat
What a brilliant couple of days at the Bristol Artist’s Book Event (BABE) at the Arnolfini at the weekend. So many people, so many talented exhibitors, and a real treat to spend the entire time talking about making books. Very inspiring (and a little bit exhausting). My friend Eva Hejdström came over from Sweden for the event, and we had a great time planning the structure for a book of our exchange of words collaboration (just 3 letters to go now). We also swapped some books, and I most definitely did very well out of that deal. So all done and dusted until 2021 – better get making again soon…
